During Term 1, Primary 5 were enjoying reading ‘Stig of the Dump’ as their class novel and were excited to create artwork linked to the story.
Cave Art was created after discussion with the pupils about the style of art Stig would have created.
Pupils made Wanted posters to help Barney and the policeman catch the two burglars. I read excerps from the novel to the pupils which described the burglars and the pupils included this in their posters. They were impressed that the Art teacher had been reading their novel and was knowledgeable about it!
Finally, pupils thoroughly enjoyed creating their own Stig model using a plastic bottle covered in papier mache.
These art sessions provided an opportunity for the pupils to discuss aspects of the novel.Their knowledge of the story and recollection of detail was impressive. For example, while adding the finishing touches, one boy suggested adding a watch to his Stig’s arm because in the story, Barney gives Stig a watch and he wears it on his arm.
